Fall in San Diego doesn’t look like the rest of the country. We don’t have blazing foliage or crisp 50-degree mornings—but that doesn’t mean we can’t embrace autumn. In fact, fall here is subtler… and honestly, it’s one of my favorite seasons to live in North County.
I grew up in New Hampshire, where fall decor was just as big as Christmas. People went all out—corn stalks, hay bales, mums, and pumpkins lining every walkway. When I moved to San Diego, I had to recalibrate what fall means here.
After years in North County, I’ve learned how to create that cozy fall feeling even when it’s 75 degrees and sunny. Here are my 10 favorite cozy things to do in San Diego this fall—with a North County lens (Solana Beach, Encinitas, Del Mar, Carlsbad, Rancho Santa Fe, and beyond).
1. Visit Bates Nut Farm for the Full Pumpkin Patch Experience
Where: Valley Center (about 30 minutes from Solana Beach)
When: late September through October
Bates Nut Farm is the pumpkin patch experience in San Diego. You’ll find heirloom varieties in colors you didn’t know existed—deep blues, pale greens, warty textures—plus hay bales for photo ops and that nostalgic scent of dried corn stalks.
What to do:
- Grab apple cider and fresh-baked goods from the farm stand.
- Let the kids run the corn maze.
- Take late-afternoon photos in the patch (best light).
- Pick an orange pumpkin for your jack-o’-lantern.
Pro tip: Go on a weekday if you can. Weekends get packed—go early when it’s cooler.
2. Have a Bonfire at Moonlight Beach
Where: Encinitas
When: October evenings
Nothing says fall like a beach bonfire. When the sun drops over the Pacific and you’re wrapped in a blanket with friends, it suddenly feels like autumn—even here.
Bring:
- Firewood (buy it nearby)
- S’mores supplies (non-negotiable)
- Blankets (it gets chilly after sunset)
- Warm drinks in a thermos (cider, hot chocolate, or spiked coffee)
Note: Fire pits can require reservations—check the city website ahead of time for current rules.
3. Drive to Julian for Apple Pie (Obviously)
Where: Julian (about an hour from North County)
When: weekdays in October
Julian is San Diego’s fall destination. The air is cooler, the town smells like pie, and the whole day feels like a reset. If you grew up with apple orchards, it scratches the itch.
The itinerary:
- Drive up early with a fall playlist.
- Apple picking at Calico Ranch or Volcan Valley Apple Farm.
- Pie at Julian Pie Company (or Mom’s Pies—both great).
- Walk main street + grab cider.
Fair warning: Julian weekends in fall are packed—weekday trips are the move.
4. Farmers Market Mornings (Fall Produce Hits Different)
Fall farmers markets in North County are underrated. Summer crowds thin, the produce shifts to squash and apples, and the midday weather becomes actually pleasant again.
My North County favorites:
- Solana Beach Farmers Market (Sundays):
Cedros Design District energy + design shops nearby. - Encinitas Farmers Market (Sundays):
Produce-focused, community vibe, beachy and relaxed. - Del Mar Farmers Market (Saturdays):
Perfect to combine with a beach walk. - Rancho Santa Fe Farmers Market (Sundays):
Smaller, curated, exceptional quality. - Carlsbad Village (Saturdays):
Neighborhood feel, great produce, less chaos.
What to buy in fall: squash, pomegranates, herbs, dahlias/zinnias, local honey, pumpkin bread, early citrus.
5. Cozy Dinner Somewhere With a Fireplace (Yes, Even Here)
It might be 68 degrees, but a restaurant fireplace still makes everything feel like fall. Make reservations—October nights fill up fast.
- Jake’s Del Mar:
Ocean views + fire pits = instant cozy. - Jeune et Jolie (Carlsbad):
Intimate, French, date-night energy. - Campfire (Carlsbad):
Wood-fired everything—rustic elegance. - The Cottage (La Jolla):
Charming brunch and cozy vibes.
6. Spend an Afternoon at a North County Winery
October is harvest season. The light gets softer, the vines shift, and tasting rooms have that autumn glow. Bring a jacket and a designated driver.
- Cordiano Winery (Escondido):
Tuscan-inspired property + great reds. - Hungry Hawk Vineyards (Escondido):
Small, family-owned, amazing views. - Witch Creek Winery (Julian):
Pair it with your apple pie day.
7. Hike Torrey Pines Early (When It’s Finally Not Miserable)
Fall is when San Diego hiking becomes enjoyable again. Morning marine layer + cooler air = the best possible Torrey Pines walk.
The route: Beach Trail Loop (about 2.3 miles). Bring light layers + coffee in a thermos for the overlook.
8. Cozy Night In (Movie Marathon + Fall Snacks)
Sometimes the coziest fall activity is staying home. Create the “sweater weather” vibe indoors—even if it’s 72 degrees.
- Set the scene:
Blankets, candles, dim lights, fireplace (real or YouTube). - Snacks:
Popcorn, warm cider, pumpkin bread, cheese board with pears/figs. - Movies:
Cozy classics + light Halloween (Practical Magic is always right).
9. Browse the Cedros Design District
Cedros in Solana Beach is a perfect slow fall afternoon: boutiques, vintage, coffee, galleries, and unhurried shopping.
What to buy: fall candles, vintage planters for the porch, cozy throws, and anything that makes your home feel like autumn.
10. Host a Fall Dinner Party (On Your Beautifully Styled Porch)
Outdoor entertaining in October is perfection in San Diego. The evenings are finally comfortable, the light is golden, and your porch can do what it was designed to do: welcome people.
The setup:
- String lights + candles down the center.
- Cozy blankets on chairs for after sunset.
- Warm cider or mulled wine as guests arrive.
The menu: keep it simple—roasted squash soup, harvest salad, roasted chicken or short ribs, Brussels sprouts, and apple crisp.
Final Thoughts
Fall in San Diego is subtle. It doesn’t announce itself with freezing temperatures or dramatic foliage. You have to seek it out—in farmers market mornings, in beach bonfires, and in weekend drives to Julian.
And honestly? Being able to enjoy autumn outdoors while everyone back East is already freezing is a gift. Cozy looks different here—and it’s still beautiful.
